Why Albir Is a Brilliant Base for a Costa Blanca Cycling Holiday

If you are looking for a cycling holiday in Spain that combines fantastic roads, challenging mountain climbs, expert coaching and a genuinely welcoming atmosphere, Albir on the Costa Blanca should be high on your list.
At Elitecycling Training Holidays, we have spent years helping riders discover the best of this region. As a professional cycling coach, my aim is to provide more than a holiday with a bike and a hotel room. I want every rider to enjoy outstanding cycling, feel supported throughout their stay and return home having achieved something they can be proud of.
Albir is an ideal base for delivering that experience. We have access to a huge variety of riding, from quieter inland roads to some of the Costa Blanca's best-known climbs, while our long-standing relationship with Albir Playa Hotel & Spa gives our guests a welcoming place to return to after every ride.
We know the area, we know the roads, and we understand how to make the riding work for different abilities. That combination is what makes an Elitecycling holiday different.
Why choose Albir for a cycling holiday?
One of the first things riders tend to comment on when they arrive is the quality of the roads. Many of the routes we use have wonderfully smooth surfaces, making riding a pleasure, whether we are tackling a mountain climb or enjoying a steady ride through the countryside.
The other thing that often surprises people is just how quiet the roads can be once we head inland.
Calpe is an established cycling destination and attracts riders from across Europe. It has a deserved reputation for excellent cycling, but its popularity can also mean busy roads and a concentration of cyclists, particularly during the main cycling season. Getting out of a busy hub can sometimes be part of the challenge.
We prefer to offer something a little different. From Albir, we have access to quieter inland roads and beautiful countryside without basing the entire holiday in the middle of one of the busiest cycling destinations.
For our guests, that means more time enjoying the ride and less emphasis on the crowds. We can plan each day around the group, select suitable routes and build a holiday that combines challenging riding with time to appreciate the surroundings.
And because we are based at Albir Playa Hotel & Spa, we have a familiar, welcoming base where our guests can relax and enjoy the social side of the holiday after a day on the bike.

Discover the Costa Blanca mountains with Elitecycling
One of the great advantages of riding with us is the variety of routes available from Albir. We have two main ways out towards the mountains, opening up different landscapes, climbs and training opportunities.
Albir to Altea la Vella and Callosa
Our first route heads inland towards Altea la Vella and then Callosa d'en Sarrià. This takes us towards the Coll de Rates area and the mountain roads around Guadalest, opening up some fantastic riding for cyclists who want to experience the inland Costa Blanca.
There is a real variety of terrain here. We can plan a ride that includes rolling roads and manageable climbs, or build a longer day around sustained climbing and the challenge of the mountains.
The Coll de Rates is one of the classic climbs in the region and a great objective for riders who want to test themselves. But you do not have to be an experienced climber to enjoy this part of Spain. With the right route, pacing and support, the experience can be rewarding for a much wider range of cyclists.
As a coach, I look beyond the route itself. I consider the riders joining us, their fitness and their ambitions, so we can make the day challenging without making it unnecessarily intimidating.
Albir through Finestrat and Sella to Puerto de Tudons
Our second route takes us through Finestrat towards Sella, where we can head into the mountains and climb Puerto de Tudons.
This is a wonderful direction for riders who enjoy longer days in the saddle and want to experience the changing scenery as the road takes us further inland. The mountainous terrain provides sustained climbing and rewarding views across the surrounding countryside.
For stronger riders, this area offers excellent opportunities for endurance work and structured climbing efforts. For others, it is an opportunity to build confidence, develop climbing fitness and enjoy a memorable day on the bike.
We do not expect everybody to ride at the same pace or have the same objectives. Our experience allows us to plan the riding around the people on the holiday, helping each rider get the most from their time with us.
That is the advantage of booking with a professional coach who knows the area and understands the demands of cycling.
A cycling holiday for more than just experienced riders
You do not need to be an elite cyclist to enjoy a Costa Blanca cycling holiday with Elitecycling.
We welcome club cyclists, regular weekend riders and people who want to improve their fitness, develop their climbing or simply enjoy a cycling holiday in a beautiful part of Spain.
The difference is how we approach the riding.
With stronger riders, I might introduce structured climbing efforts, sustained tempo work or specific training objectives designed to improve performance. For riders who prefer a more social experience, the emphasis can be on enjoying the countryside, riding at a comfortable pace and making the most of the day.
The routes we use offer plenty of flexibility, and our coaching experience helps us match the challenge to the individual.
Some of the most rewarding moments on our holidays happen when somebody reaches the top of a climb they genuinely thought was beyond them. Seeing the expression on their face when they realise what they have achieved is one of the best parts of my job.
It is not just about how fast you ride or how many kilometres you cover. It is about building confidence, discovering what you can achieve and returning home with a real sense of accomplishment.
Whether you want to improve your cycling performance or enjoy a week of excellent riding in good company, our aim is to make the experience rewarding from the first day to the last.

Albir Playa Hotel & Spa: a relationship that makes a difference
The hotel is an important part of what we offer, and our relationship with Albir Playa Hotel & Spa goes well beyond simply booking accommodation.
Over the years, we have developed genuine friendships with the people there. They know us, they know our holidays and they help make our guests feel welcome. We are fortunate to have a relationship in which our guests are treated as part of the family rather than just another booking.
That personal connection matters. A cycling holiday should be about feeling comfortable, knowing that the arrangements have been taken care of and being able to concentrate on enjoying the experience.
Staying in Albir also gives us a balance that we particularly value: access to outstanding cycling during the day and a calmer environment in which to relax afterwards.
We are also fortunate to work with fantastic local partners, including D'Origen, our coffee partner. For me, returning from a ride and finishing the day with a quality coffee is a special part of the experience.
There are coffee stops on our longer rides, of course, but our connection with D'Origen gives the group somewhere familiar to come together, talk about the day's challenges and share the stories that make cycling holidays memorable.
Those moments off the bike are an important part of the holiday, too.

Bike hire made easier
Travelling abroad with your own bike can involve extra cost, planning and the practicalities of transporting equipment. To make things easier, Elitecycling offers a fleet of Basso road bikes based at Albir Playa Hotel & Spa.
Our bikes have 12-speed Campagnolo Chorus groupsets and are maintained and prepared at the hotel. They are equipped with gearing suited to the region's climbs, and a Kask helmet is included.
You will need to bring your own pedals, cycling shoes and bike computer with its mount. We recommend arranging bike hire in advance so that we can allocate the right bike for your stay.
Having our hire fleet on site makes the logistics simpler and allows us to focus on what matters: getting you ready to enjoy the riding.
